Consider this scenario: it’s bedtime, everyone is tucked in nice and tight and you can either read your daughter a story about a princess who is saved by some prince who whisks her away, or you can read her a book about women who have become their own heroes, and heroes for other women – which option do you choose? This is a no-brainer for us so you can imagine how excited we were to discover the incredible publication we’re about to introduce you to…

Meet Goodnight Stories For Rebel Girls – a marvellous bedtime book filled to the brim with 100 stories of brave, intelligent, and independent women from the past and present, illustrated by 60 female artists from all over the world.

Editors Elena Favilli (award-winning journalist and media entrepreneur) and Francesca Cavallo (award-winning writer and director, this is her 7th children’s book), realized that 95% of the books and TV shows they grew up with, lacked girls in prominent positions – and after a little research they discovered things haven’t really changed much over the past 20 years. So, they decided to do something about it…

Taking to Kickstarter, the women had the goal to raise $40k in funding to make this tome a reality – which they surpassed, and then some. The campaign raised $675,614! Making Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls the most-funded original book in the history of crowdfunding.

If you need convincing that the concept of women being saved is and always has been silly, check out the video below. Rapunzel is turned on its head to become Bropunzel – a short video clip to show how ridiculous it is for women to wait around to be saved by a prince. Little ladies with impressionable minds deserve much more than being told over and over again that they need a prince to save them and make their lives better, and this book is leading the way with its true stories.

The book inspires girls to dream bigger and aims higher, two statements we can stand behind. There are two volumes of the book, which make for a unique gift for the little ladies in your life (check out The Rebel Gift Box set here). And quite frankly, we’re ready to add this to our grown-up library as well…

Naturally, we wholeheartedly recommend reading these stories to your sons as well as your daughters. It is crucial that they learn to identify and empathize with female heroes as well – and unfortunately, a large chunk of literature seems to be lacking in this area. In fact: The stories in this book are a great source of inspiration for anyone, male or female, child or adult.
